Important Update from Uganda Ahead of Presidential Election

In the days leading up to Uganda’s January 15 presidential election, authorities have cut off public access to the internet nationwide. This move, which began on the evening of January 13, affects social media, messaging, and browsing services for millions of people across the country.

The shutdown comes as President Yoweri Museveni seeks another term amid a tense political environment and growing concerns about fairness, freedom of expression, and open access to information.

This internet disruption — part of broader restrictions including media limitations and restrictions on some rights groups’ operations — makes it much harder for civil society, journalists, families, and young people to stay informed and participate fully in civic processes.

At Lily Rose Children’s Society, we stand for every child’s right to information, inclusion, and a voice in their future. 🌍📱 Elections shape the world children will inherit — and access to information and communication is key to protecting democratic participation and human rights.

✊ We call on global leaders, human rights defenders, and social platforms to support open information flows and protect spaces where children and young people can safely engage, learn, and grow.
